PANK magazine runs a blog column called Books We Can’t Quit, in which contributors wax on about their favourite books from any era.
I relish Victorian novels in general, but Elizabeth Gaskell’s in particular, so I wrote about North and South, a social drama set in industrial Northern England. Gaskell was a colleague of Dickens and shares his interest in the impacts of the industrial revolution on the poor and the middle classes. There are so many things to admire about this novel, my post could have been twice as long. In ten years maybe I’ll write it again.
